This is a great parable.

I would like to throw my two cents in case anyone would care to "listen."

My primary concern has to do with the attitude of the congregation. I have seen this attitude many times, and not just directed to the homeless. I have a friend who had found himself in a situation where he felt alone. There were no others helping him hold on to whatever "worthless" (this is how he felt at the time, and not to be confused with Truth, which is timeless) morals he fought so hard to cling to. He believed in Jesus. He believed in the calling on his life. He was just facing some incredible hardships and his secret fears became full-fledged doubts. The people around him thought that he was a really good person, but they just couldn't relate to him in "that way." He was fighting alone. I was fighting alone.

Quick digression:

Battered and torn
still I can see the light
tattered and worn
but I must kneel to fight

Friend of mine
what can't you spare
I know some times
it gets cold in there

When my legs no longer carry
and the warm wind chills my bones
I reach for mother Mary <-- Don't get hung up here! We're still talking about Jesus
and I shall not walk alone

Hope is alive
while we're apart
only tears
speak from my heart
break the chains that hold us down
and we shall be
forever bound

When I'm tired and weary
and a long way from home
I reach for mother Mary
and I shall not walk alone

Beauty that
we left behind
how shall we
tomorrow find

Set aside
our weight in sin
so that we
can live again

-Ben Harper's song, "I Shall Not Walk Alone"

We've all been "battered and torn - tattered and worn." We must fight against the attitude that everything is ok with everyone around us, regardless of the "social veneer." Be aware of this attitude and overcome it. I just thought of a good example - There are some people I run into and say, "How are you doing?" and the respons is "goodnyou?" Sometimes this affects me. I really want to know how you are doing! I find myself not answering their "question" by asking, "Really?" People aren't expecting us to care - yes even as Christians (probably more so!). I ask, "How are you doing?" because, most times, I really want to know. I also realize that sometimes the person might not be someone I want to let in, but God has a way of turning those situations into the most rewarding. All in all, the love that was invested in you needs to grow. The only way to let it grow is to let it grow.

Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse, open sleigh (I would imagine)...

Love,

Jason

P.S. - If you are dealing with those issues right now, and you can't find anyone to talk to, send me an email. I will try to respond quickly...
