Anyone ever read a book titled, "A Seperate Peace," by Jonathan Knowles? It has a similar feel to "Dead Poets Society" -- this might have something to do with the setting. I savor the movie every time I see it. It has a hint of old leather-bound books, creaky wooden floors, and a vintage taste of victory.
The book is much the same, although it is a bit chillier. The inspiration, though comes from the boys, themselves. I don't think there is as much involvement with scholastics or literary references as in DPS.
Now that I think of it, the chorus in one of my more recent attempts at song is more than a little influenced by "A Seperate Peace" --
The tree shakes,
The leaves fall,
The limb breaks,
I stall.
The limb breaks,
The boy falls,
The last takes
My all.
(Here's the bridge for a little bit more explanation:
Dubbed, "the hero-boy" in his own mind
He is always seeking after the one, his own kind
Forever under-recognized, oh yeah, that boy is blind,
Is he stealing, is he missing, is he beating?
He will shine, he will shine.
*the second time through ends with:
Is he healing, is he kissing, is he eating?
He will shine, he will shine.)
I hope you enjoyed this unexpected ramble...

P.S. - I tried to be a little vague when describing "A Separate Peace" because I think it is worth reading -- and the flavors that are evoked in my head might or might not match those in yours...
