Not a stretch of the imagination really. I could totally buy it providing the source is truly reliable. Modern anthropologists are just really beginning to understand exactly how well traveled and intermingled the world has been. I think it has something to do with the relatively recent trend to drop the cultural bias in history, i.e. writing it to reflect one's desired result... you know Custer, Columbus, all that.
