Last night for the first time I was introduced to Gandhi. I had always heard about he was a great soul, but now I truly understand. I think he was significant as a non-Christian too since he discovered God through consicence and grew to see God as not just for Hindus but for Muslims and Christians as well. He actually came to see the brotherhood of man as a function of God. He also began to conceive of God in more loving terms and this led him to a conversion of heart. The key to his social war was a war in the heart. He said before there was peace outside, there had to be peace inside. He mourned the separation between Muslims and Hindus when India gained independence. He prayed and fasted for their reunification. Ultimately, Gandhi was following Christ. He was laying down his life for his friends. Another sign that Gandhi was following Christ was that he befriended the poorest of the poor, like Mother Teresa. He also urged Indian people to get rid of their English clothes and return to tradtional Indian clothes. They even made their own thread and sewed new white garments. He clothed a whole nation in white garments. Neat! They burned the English clothes, but sought not to harm the English. His message was one of peaceful resistance. He was willing to break unjust laws but not to consider England and enemy. Infact, he considered the English his teachers. He viewed them as just as much in need of God and conversion as he. He also realized that God could teach him humility through them. Gandhi is such a shining example of holiness, even though he was not a Christian, he was conformed to Christ in the actions of his life and meditations of his heart. once he told someone do not call me a saint until you see me die from a gunshot wound at peace with the name of God on my lips. that is how he died.
