the other day as i was walking home from work, i came across a handsome little bird, perched in a tree. his whistling was so low and distinct that i could easily immitate it. so i responded to one of his calls. promptly he swooped down from his safe little perch and came vulnerably close to my face, actually flying so close to me that i could feel his feathers beating the air across my ear and cheek. then he flew in an arc in the other direction from me. each time i whistled, however, he flew back (looking playful and confused at the same time), lightly brushing the air against me and circling back again.....this continued the length of a full street block.....then i had to cross a busy street and i think that the bird must have had his limit. he must have flown past my face about a doxen times. he sure was brave. hmmmm.......did he think i was a female (here i am assuming two things--one that he was male, and two that i was echoing a mating call)....????
all i know is that i actually had a conversation with a bird. now, knowing that saint francis talked to animals, does this mean that soon i will have the stigmata and see the seraphic christ in my kitchen? just questions......but the bird thing was real cool.
