Björk's new movie DANCER IN THE DARK is one of the most unusual films
I have seen in quite some time. It is musical set around a woman who
is going blind because of a disease she was born with and which she
has passed on to her son. Her whole mission in life is to make sure
that she can raise enough money to get the proper surgery done for
her son so that he can grow up without the fear of losing his own
vision. DITD is sort of like a cross between THE SOUND OF MUSIC and
TWIN PEAKS. The movie is at times tender, intense, sad and
frightening, with several escapes into odd bursts of song that seem
like simple childlike ponderings and huge end-of-the-world anthems--
at the same time. As usual, Björk's performances, body language,
dancing, voice control are haunting and otherworldly. She comes from
the land of elves remember. I would recommend this movie, although I
found it at times, hard to watch. But, to me it is important since it
really is a musical, complete with dancers and all. The last time I
recall a movie anything like this was when I saw SHALL WE DANCE? or
STRICTLY BALLROOM. Hey, maybe it's about time we relearn the art of
the musical.
