************THE GHOST OF DEBUEL ROAD******************
a true story by Bill Rogers
and as far as giant lizards emerging from the side of the road.....i have a similar story. one night when leaving the meigs' home and driving down debuel, i saw something that i still cannot explain. i believe it to be an animal spirit, or some spirit that took animal form. i truly believe this. what i saw was something halfway between a dog and a deer, perhaps like an antelope (although these do not occur naturally in this area).....it was bounding across the road w/ an unmistakable presence and solidity, although it was an apparition. what i saw was transparent and had a bluish glow to it, yet it had the wild corporeality of an beast. it didn't seem malevolent, or even aware of me. it simply bounded across the road (you could almost her paws or hoofs on tarmac) and then crashed into the bushes on the north side of debuel. all this occurred just east of where the flood signs are posted. whatever this spectral beast was doing here, it seemed like it had someplace to go very quickly and it was swift and almost magical in its movements. it seemed to simply disappear in the undergrowth as quickly as it had appeared before wildly careening across debuel.
one detail i might have omitted will help explain what I meant by transparent. by this i did not mean a sort of glassy or gelatinous sort of transparency, what i mean is this. on the one hand i could see the creature on the roadside and i could see his fur and everything radiating a sort of bluish light. then, at the same time i could see the road the lines on the road right through the creatre. it wasn't the transparency of glass, but the transparency that speaks of presence, as if something really were there, but on some heightened plane of existence where both the creature and the road before me could both be present without cancelling each other out. i didn't want to create the illusion of a wire ghost. here we had a fully functioning creature, who at once was phantasmic and visceral. yeah....something like this. sort of like a ghost who doesn't just appear in space but inhabits it and takes it up. the more i think about this the more i realize that the spirit world is very complex and that it has a wonderful element to it. i used to go walking in civil war graveyards at night with my buddy Rod from Atlanta. we would tell remarkable ghost tales as the hills of the south abound in them. I have another friend who witnessed records lifting off of a table and flying across a nightclub he worked at. there were three witnesses to this strange event. i love this stuff--to me it all points to some mystery outside of us. one day i'll have to tell my 'falling picture' story, unless anyone wants to hear it now....
