Basically the way we've done it in the past is that we go to a wooded place and set some boundaries just so we don't end up going everywhere. Then the runner gets a 5 minute head start. After that, the hunters try to catch him/her using paintball weapons, the guns if you have one, but a slingshot works really well with paintballs, and they are very cheap. We've always allowed that you can use any equipment you want as long as it is agreed upon by everyone at the start of the game. If the runner is caught quickly, then someone else runs. Otherwise the game runs until people give up, usually about two hours. The things is, the more people you have, the easier it is to flush a runner.
And actually the original version of the game never used any sort of weapon, you actually had to "catch" the runner, physically, which was harder in alot of ways. We also added a provision in that version where the hunter could whistle for the runner and the runner had to respond unless the hunter was within twenty feet or so. But with paintball weapons we removed that provision because they are faster and have a long range.
Actually the idea came from England where these hunts are quite popular. With the declining number of foxes, it was not good to have all these people out killing them as per the British tradition of fox hunting, so they began hiring runners to play the fox. They sick the dogs on them and they get their chase on horseback across the countryside. Eventually the dogs will catch the runner, but they just lick him alot. The real fun is in the pursuit on horseback across the terrain. Not in the actual trophy of the fox. So we translated the game to here where large game hunting was very popular until the same thing happened. Not enough game. Plus there is no better prey than one that can think back against you. Did you ever read, "The Most Dangerous Game" in high school?
So far only guys have hunted me, but you know girls are really good at these things as well. So I'd love to be hunted by some more people. Last year Mike Cleary brought his dog Nora!
: I was just wondering, what does this entail?
: ---------------------------------------------
:
: : Well everyone knows that I'm usually doing something wierd. Well this is no exception.
: : The weather is cooling off enough now that people actually like being outside, so the time is right for another hunt! Yes the game is back and I am, as yet, un-caught. That's right, hunt me. There's actually no better animal to pit your skills against than a human, and it's nonlethal, so there's no cruelty or conservation issues. We've done it before and it was a blast. This year let's make it bigger. Guys, girls, dogs are all welcome. You can even be the prey if you think you can.
: : Some people have already decided to go and their planning on using some nice equipment to try to make me a trophy.
: : Let me know if you want to play! We'll do it some weekend in the next few weeks.
: : And for all of those who were curious about experience and instinct, here's your chance to put it to use. You may surprise yourself.
