. If we are going to experience him it will be because he consciously wills it and humbles himself such that we can grasp him. I remember being at church when this idea hit me. I was literally laughing at the utter silliness of everyone with their arms raised and heads to the side and eyes closed and smiles and all, then my gaze turned to myself sitting in my wild shirt doing none of those things out of obstinance and I laughed at myself as well.
You've felt this too? Good, at least I'm not the only one. How few times I've completely given myself over to worship and found myself with my arms raised and it was really great to realize this is the way it should be, but how many times I looked around and thought "How strange this is."
I think this is a something my spirit needs to overcome. I'm sure one day my spirit will tell my flesh to take a back seat again.
I've tried to see what the whole sacred space of church was about. I've tried to meditate in the pews before the ornate statuary and all, but once the wonder at the beauty of it all wore off I found myself spritually dry as a bone, yet in the minimal natural landscape of a dirt lot with struggling weedy vegetation I can pray like a mystic!
I agree with you and my experience with the Catholic church is not direct but usually through a friend, I just never got it. Not just that but, I HATE how quiet it is in there! What I did seem to get was the preacher at the Wesleyen church I went to preaching fire and brimstone and you need to get saved! How odd! What I really think it's about is God saying "Hey I love you, whatever I have to do to get you to realize that, I will do it."
