Then one day after a couple of years something clicked in my pseudopsychopsyche, and I just knew I could never cold-call sell anything ever again. That was 20 years ago, and though I have actually tried to do it for short periods a couple of times since then (storm windows to homeowners in 1981 and wholesale tape to stores in 1992) I did not last long. I just have to fully believe in what I am selling. This is why I am a teacher, I guess; I really believe what I am providing is important. If I ever sold a product, I would have to feel like I would buy it myself, like Macintosh computers, Taylor guitars, or theology courses. ;-)
I had a similar revelation, not that I was ever any good at it! I actually hated the environment.
