Anybody watching me walk into the movie theatre with my three boys would assume I grudgingly took them to see Spiderman because THEY wanted to see it. Truth is I went to see Spiderman and I took them just to be nice. Yeah I was there at 4:30pm on the day it opened in theatres everywhere. Yeah, I absolutely LOVED it!
Sony pictures and Marvel have been true to the characters and story of Spiderman.
Toby Mcguire is Peter Parker the Spectacular Spiderman incarnate.
Danny Elfman does his usual magic, building tension and harmonizing with the amazement of Parker as he realizes the new power he posesses.
You've seen Director Sam Raimi's work before if you have seen Zena-Warrior Princess or Army of Darkness.
Of course it helps to have Stan Lee himself as co-producer!
The developement of the relationship between Mary Jane and Peter is sweet and touching.
The transitions from CG Spiderman to live Spiderman is flawless. The special effects take you on a wild swinging ride all over the New York skyline. They did make a couple changes but, I suppose they had good reasons and they weren't major things.
One thing I always loved about the Spiderman comics is that Peter was always an oasis of integrity in an otherwise corrupt world and even though he had an occasional struggle he always came back to protector and hero, and he never stopped being a down-to-earth guy.
As his uncle would say "with great power, comes great responsibility" Peter took that to heart.
There is a bittersweet element to Peters story, but although he sometimes questions his choice to become a protector, he never becomes bitter. Sure there is sadness, but there is also great joy at times. I own those some of those stories with their adventure and romance. I loved the hero and cheered for him and felt his pain. I allowed myself to get lost in the world of Spiderman as he fought to protect the city from villians like Green Goblin, Dr Octopus, and the Lizard. So many times these villians were his friends. What's a boy to do?
Some girls wanted to be Cinderella, I wanted to be Spiderman.
Friday I was almost there, web-slinging and wall-crawling right along side him.
Finally.
Yay
