I personally think it is silly to take God out of the pledge of allegiance. However, it is also silly to insist that is must be there. Although the majority of the US does beleive in God, many don't. Yet they are forced to say that in some schools. And this is the problem.
I think that this issue is less about persecution than about letting non-believers continue in their non-beliefs. Almost no schools tell children that that cannot pray. (I say almost because some do, and thhat is a problem, but not the current issue.) Children just cannot do it as a class activity. Neither can non-beleivers have rituals as a class activity.

I think it should stay, but more on traditional grounds than anything else. The pledge is part of american culture, and should be accepted as that.

To see my point better, try flipping this issue into the opposite perspective. (I always do this as a cheap trick to see if the logic of an argument really makes sense.) Suppose that this country was built on paganism. Suppose the pledge said "under Gaea". Suppose you still had your current beliefs. Would you honestly consider taking "under Gaea" out to be persecution of pagans? Or would it be adding a level of equality because you no longer had to hear something so opposite to your beliefs?

But really, I come back to the same thing. Let it stay. Its been there for hundreds of years, most people like it, most people even agree with it, and the ones who don't live with it. So why create discord when there really isn't much to begin with?

(especially considering that it just says 'God', and that includes Judaism, Hindus, Muslims, and many other religions other than the various flavors of christianity.)

Anyway... back to work for me.

With Love,
Bob

: my thoughts are simply, "what else would you expect?" We are told that Christians will face persectution. And we are told that as we approach the last days things will get worse. So why do Christians constantly lament the fact that this so-called Christian nation isn't anymore? The truth of the matter was that it never was really. It was merely the political fashion of the day to acknowledge some religiosity when the nation was formed. Just like every president claims some religious affiliation regardless of how they live or what they practice.

: Further, it isn't really all that bad here. I can pray at work. I can talk about God. And when I graduated high school, a scant 7 years ago, we prayed and talked about God all the time. We must be careful not to take our worldview from the news media.

: Plus over it all, God is still in control, and though the wicked seemingly prosper for a time, they won't overtake us. In fact, I'd rather live in a nation where being a Christian meant something, than in one where everyone claimed to be and then went ahead and did whatever they felt like anyway.
