Know what? The most beautiful people in the world suffer from depression. Someone once said that genius borders on insanity. I think that theory kind of works the same way with heart. Those who have a bigger share of heart than the rest of the world also have a bigger share of pain. You can debate which comes first, the heart or the pain, but it doesn't matter. What matters is that the people who make our lives better, our days brighter, our eyes bigger, and our self-esteem higher are the same ones who beat themselves mercilessly because they feel worthless.

We know the things that make it bearable and even better, but when we're down, it's hard to do those things. Physical exercise, people, scripture, prayer, worship, music that uplifts us, even when we don't feel like being uplifted. And sometimes medication. If it's a chemical imbalance, for goodness sakes, fix the chemistry. No point in feeling like a loser for grabbing the cure with both hands, because somehow you're supposed to "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps!" That aphorism is meaningful only in the sense of doing what we know it takes to get better.

We're artists, poets, musicians, caregivers, lovers of people and God and all things beautiful. Except ourselves. But that's what makes us most wonderful sometimes. And that's what makes us easier to relate to and be used by the ultimate Creator.
