I've found that most people don't define art correctly because they get caught up in the concept of visual artists that are seen in galleries and museums. But that is only one small niche of what we call art. Art is really just your own personal way of expressing your passions. For some people, it is visual, for others it is music, or writing, and for some it is physical activities...it can really be anything. Whatever it is that lets you express your true self to the world, that is art. : : Now, of course we can add more layers to that and start to put value judgments on what art is worthwhile. The usual criteria end up including such a range of things as external beauty, political or ethical statements, quality of craftsmanship, intellectual communication, or other such bunk. And while it is true that you must meet these criteria to make a living as an artist, that doesn't invalidate any art that doesn't fall into these realms. There is a big difference between art in general, and the professional/academic art world. : : The Web has actually greatly expanded art in the world. Now anyone can share their art with the world. You are no longer limited to just showing your friends. This is a wonderful thing. : : The danger here is that it has made the 'art world' even more critical of 'amateur' artists. I am seeing a gap. One one hand we have the art that we see at our friends homes, coffeeshops, and : restuarants. On the other hand, there is the art that is accepted by the established art world. I have known many artists who struggle to bridge this gap, when they should not have to struggle so hard. : : So the question in my mind has nothing to do with who can do art or how we define art. It is a question of how we show the rest of the world the value of all art, no matter how it would hold up to an academic critique. : .................................................................................................... : bridging the gap isa nota easy i agree. there are these laws invisible and visible that say what is good art. some are good well thought out on balance composition use of color. but others are. (placed your favorite expluritive here_________. ) because they are built on fear on personal opinion of what is good art. others are made by people who have never done a piece of art ..some are made by people who desire to do art was crushed by the ones who kill the art spirit. as artist we to do art. and not be afraid to mess up the apple cart. there have been visionaries dreamers and rebels in the world of art. and there will be new one being born . there has always been outside art primitive art ,art brut, ,and in the last few years the acceptance of this grows greater.. : art is a freedom to convey. art is a movement to bring something invisible visible. art is. i believe we came from a being that is creative and we are made from in his image. we too then are creative beings. we need to create. just like we need to breathe. : here are a few simple everyday dreamers that did something : finister folks art : basquiat graffiti : haring graffiti : juxapost magazine : raw vision magazine : i read this amazing book on art called the art spirit. it is by robert henri. a famous artist early america his book was a series of letters, quotes, and findings. he wrote complaint letters to galleries and teachers who wanted to teach with arrogant pride, (the ones who can destroy the beautiful simplicity in being creative) and he wrote to young artist challenging them to make their own art, to find their own voice, also he did nt despise art education but warned it. this book was freeing. : : one thing that excites me about what is about to happen here at pu is what the building can be used for a place to hang work...to sell work...to explore the possibilities of what is out there. to capture then release the energy into others to challenge others to do art and do it well. : the artist here...we do fit with the art world thanks to folk art rebels brut/primitive groups. .I DO BELIEVE...we can do something really cool and purposeful with our art. make some statement a movement of wonder : folk art is amazing people buy it. .and some ."some people are tired of happy florida fish !!!" : : to answer the question. .how do we do this...we see the rules that are prescribe to us as artist and we use the guidelines. but we are not to allow us to be stuck with the rules...we can create our own as well...make our voice be heard... : to quote nike....Just do it.... : we need to do it.. we need to buy material ask others if the have extra material find material trade for materials. and then create with wild abandon. do our art. find our vision. then when we have to make it public. hang it on telephone poles, give it away. ask others to help place it into portfolios then hit the streets call galleries. find other art groups "network" submit submit submit to art mags. go to art shows. find what shows want and what your art can do and fit. art can fit in the most interesting places... : there is also the temporal sacrifice.....sacrifice that second coke etc. : also hook up with others that can push you to do it. fellowship, talk about art. see movies on artists. read books visit websites write letters to artist you admire as long as they are alive..get inside the artist mind and soul of artist you like : when it comes to fellowship call people all pool money together for a night of entertainment, also when buying supplies buy in bulk if you can. : : lastly for this post at least. DO NOT GIVE UP.....dont give up.....it is your art. dont let anyone steal your voice... : have a good one : : ps this also works for poets./writers.............................
