Bryon,
I will not speak for Steve or Parallel Universe here. Also, I will not go into the whole doctrine of the Immaculate Conception here, since it really is tedious and interlocked with so many other beliefs. Still I will say this. In a nutshell, what we Catholics believe is that Mary, by the grace of God, at the moment of her conception was preserved from all stain of original sin. This might sound like heresy to certain protestants, and I can understand why. Still, in order to understand this teaching we would have to go into:
1)the Catholic beliefs about the kind of time space union shared by Christ and Mary
2)the idea of original sin and in Catholicism
3)the idea of salvation and God's grace
I think the main thing that might shock a non-Catholic is the idea that Mary is sinless. This would have to do with the whole idea, based on the scripture that talks about there not being ONE righteous, NO to one, except Jesus of course. So, this might have led folks to see Mary as NOT in need of a saviour, which she was. Jesus is her saviour, just like he is ours.
Some things that the Immaculate Conception is NOT"
1)It is not the Virginal conception of Jesus in the womb of Mary.
2)It is not teaching that Mary did not need a savior. She even calls God Savior in the Bible.
3)It is not teaching that Mary would not have contracted original sin without the action of God.
I don't know what Parallel Universe's belief on this is (I would defer to Steve on it), but since I think this is a matter of truth and not convenience, I would encourage you to be circumspect and investigate it from every angle. Don't just settle for the Catholic or non-Catholic position on it. Still, hunger for the truth.
I won't tell you how to believe, but I'm open for private emails if you want to discuss it. I'm also not one for having agendas on religion, so I won't try to force any certain views on you or anyone else here. Also, I won't purposely teach something in conflict of interest with Steve (I am a supporter of Parallel Universe--why would I want to do that?), however, where I hold a Catholic belief, I reserve the right to be OUT about that. Still, I don't have a particular desire to sway anyone. You are adults and can think for yourselves.
Thanks for asking Bryon.
Bill--who is a believer!
