I am currently plowing through Philip Yancey's SOUL SURVIVOR. This book is a sort of hall-of-fame of many of the heroes in the author's own life. There are many reasons to like Philip Yancey. He is not afraid to link his Christian faith with reason. He is also not afraid to discuss the dark underbelly of Christendom or to see the light outside it's rigidly drawn lines. He is not afraid to celebrate the virtues of his heroes while enumerating their vices. He is also aware of his own virtues and vices. In Yancey's vision, grace constantly incarnates itself in the dark half of our lives. Yancey can tell us of God's love and fuzzy foxes at play while he also reminds us of "the tiny Amazon Candiru catfish that swims up the urethra of an unsuspecting bather, then extends its sharp spines, causing excruciating pain..." Yancey's universe is smiling at us even when it's back is turned. Yancey points at the concretization of grace amidst the instances of absurdity in our world.
