: this sounds awesome! i've longed to have my own site where i can post my art/photos/poetry etc. without having to deal with host sites. this would be too cool! i'm fairly computer literate, but i have to ask, how hard is it to create a web site? i'm up for trying!
A basic website is pretty easy. As you learn more you can try adding more bells and whistles. There are lots of tutorials out there on html and javascript. But the easiest way is to use a program like Dreamweaver or GoLive which does the coding for you, and you interact with a graphic user interface (GUI) where "what you see is what you get," otherwise know as WYSIWYG. It's pronounced wussy-wig, like a pansy-boy with fake hair. You will have to take the time to learn the program, as with any complex software, but the programs come with full documentation and tutorials.
The other necessity is mastering some sort of a graphics program like Adobe Photoshop, as this is how you will manipulate your photographs or scans of your art to enhance and format them for the web.
Do you have still have a website now? You could start by moving it to our server, or you could start from scratch, or you could do BOTH--get your old website up on our server now and use it until your new one is ready to go.
We can talk more Sunday about buying some WYSIWYG and graphics software PC users can share. For those with Macs, I have Adobe GoLive 6 and Photoshop 6. (I think Mike Cleary has Photoshop 7, but the 6 works fine.)
Your main initial commitment is going to be learning the software you will be using.
