Wow Steve, you and I could go on and on about these films. I could never say enough about DREAMS for instance, by Akira Kurosawa. I also saw KIKUJIRO and loved the scenes of camping out with those strange guys. Wow! Bizarre. One of the best Asian films I've seen was THE SHOWER, a Northern Chinese film about a family who owns a public bath and about the two sons and the father and their relationships. It's a touching story about home and family. SHALL WE DANCE was perfection! I still hope to see SALAAM BOMBAY and MONSOON WEDDING. I really want to see more good Indian films.
I had seen CENTRAL STATION once before, but thankfully Tiffany returned them to you via me, so I could watch it a second time. I love this movie about about Dora's journey to discovering her own life again. It was amazing! Other Brasilian films I liked were BYE BYE BRASIL! and of course PIXOTE. There are many movies I would like to see from Brasil, but these will mostly be hard to find.
As far as foreign films go, I also liked PONETTE and CINEMA PARADISO. I still hope to see EAST IS EAST someday. I'd also like to see more older French, Italian and Brasilian films. Does anyone know some good films from other countries? Eastern Europe? The Middle East? Latin America? Spain? Algeria? Norway? Feel free to comment here.....
I'm glad that I have friends who can go from STRICTLY BALLROOM and SHALL WE DANCE all the way to TWELVE MONKEYS. I'm glad that they not only like these movies, but have really learned the art of watching them.
