What if I was to say to you
that none of those old dreams came true
not even a stain on the carpet of the house of wishes had set in
What if all my hopes are floating
bloated, dumb and purple
against the granite on the beach of no regret
What if all my aspirations
whisked away like perspiration
on a 5K run to the top of the heap
Well it seems to me then life is nothing
but feeble attempts at grasping for something
like rotten carrots dangling from a leash
But I'm surprised to hear you say that I
am one of the people you most admire
If I swam you'll guess I'm better than Mark Spitz
And if I was a dress designer
I would be the one you'd hire
cause no one else can make it so it fits
and if I was an architect my buildings would all project
my witty sense of style and joie de vivre
the fact that you would say such things leads me to think much better things
like life is not all that bad, dreams and wishes aren't all I've had
and a detour is just a way to get to somewhere that you never could before beleive
