: : I recently heard a man talking about how Santa Claus actually saved Christmas. He was explaining that Christmas was largly unobserved until very recently. I think it was the Victorians or maybe after them. Anyway somebody revived the legend of St Nicolas and people started giving presents to children on Christmas rather than the usual drinking and cavorting (which apparently included knocking on doors and demanding figgy pudding or else!) this turned Christmas time into a family time rather than a drunken brawling vandalizing time. It also made people remember what Christmas time was really about - The birth of Christ. Who knew?
