And you can rent an apt. with a "real" view. A view of the Pacific or of the gorgeous mountains to the east. It is also a prime spot to be an elementary teacher if you like muesums. In Balboa park you can take you pick of up to 12 different muesums for the "monthy" field trip. Oh yeah, and also because of La Jolla beach - where you can get face to face with beached sea lions ^_^
San Diego is GREAT - I've been there (but not recently). The weather is perfect, and there are also actually some HILLS. The only hills we have around here are ant hills... :-(
