There is often nothing we really can do, and that is a very hard thing to accept indeed. Leaving things in God's hands is a decision that must be made again every day. Often we give our cares to Him but then take them back very quickly. God knows what he is doing, but we may not understand His wisdom or like His time frame.
Also, your first desire must be for your friend's relationship with God, before your desire for him to be with you. That can be difficult also, I know...
