well bob, we can actually reproduce multiple times. you may have noticed that many human families have more than one child. if each family had only one child, the population would be cut in half every generation. this is because it takes two humans to conceive a new human. eventually we would die out. once in a while a mother might have more than one child at a time, but this is rare, most of the time a human pregnancy results in only one child. also, there are many humans who do not reproduce at all. also, just because people have sex doesn't mean that a child will result from it. most of the time there are no children after sex.
all that to say, to continue the propogation of the species (generally speaking) it is good to keep on having sex even if you have had it once.
you may be interested in studying salmon. they swim to a spot upstream, reproduce in great quantity and then die. perhaps these creatures are more like the beings on your planet?

i'm not sure about salmon living forever though. perhaps they do, not sure. maybe you should attend one of pastor steve's Pet Blessings, he may be able to clear things up for you on that score. it could be that an old lady will sing really bad kareoke quite wonderfully there too, which is always a bonus.
