Just what I could come up with in 15 : minutes of brainstorming. : <b> : : Where Bob - The Alien has eaten. </b></p> : <b>Recommended Non-Chain Restaurants</b></p> : <ul> : <li>Wausau Mine Company -- Wausau, WI. Good Pizza. We went there a lot as a : kid. But its smoky. If that bugs you, skip it. : : </li> : <li>Fuji -- Darien, CT. No Longer open. Excellent Japanese food that first turned : me onto Japanses cuisine when Iw as in high school. : : </li> : <li>Athena Diner -- Fairfield, CT. Its a cheap diner with mediocre food, but : they still have a jukebox on every table, and its a great late-night talk : place. : : </li> : <li>Some Brazilian place on 44th in Manhattan, just west of Times Square -- : Dunno its name, but we went there very early once. We were the only people : in the place, so the staff sat down with us, had dinner with us, and told : us all about Brazil. It was very cool. : : </li> : <li>Fire and Ice -- OMG, If you are ever in Boston, head over to Harvard Square : for this place. Its similar to a Mongolian Barbecue, but with a much greater : variety of ingredients and sauces. Full of Harvard kids, but still a great : place to have dinner. : : </li> : <li>Jerusalem -- The Best Middle Eastern food in Denver. Sits right next to : DU, and is open until very late at night. Highly recommended. : : </li> : <li>Jim's Burger Haven -- In North Denver. When you have a burger craving, they : make these burgers that are very flat, and almost 7 inches in diameter. Its : worth it just to see the size of the buns. But because theya re so flat, they : are still edible by one person. : : </li> : <li>Bombay Clay Oven -- One of the better Indian Place in Denver. Very tasty : Desserts, and they let you sit on big pillows with your shows off. : : </li> : <li>Pasta Jay's -- Boulder's definitve Pasta place. Its the place we always : go after a day hiking in the hills. : : </li> : <li>Chezy Thuy -- Incredible Noodle Bowls for lunch. Used to go there for lunch : 2-3 times a week, til they stopped taking my order and just brought out the : noodle bowls when they saw me come in. : : </li> : <li>Narayan's -- The von's favorite place in Colorado. Sadly, closed and turned : into a nightclub. : : </li> : <li>Pad Thai -- Little hole in the wall thai place next to my apartment in Denver. : Cheap, quiet, and tasty. : : </li> : <li>Space Needle -- This place is incredible. You take the elevator to the top : of the space needle, and the resturant turns so you have an incredible view : of Seattle as you eat. Its expensive, but worth it. : : </li> : <li>Baby Doe's -- Nice place near Downtown Denver. Definitely a date place. : Historic old building with soft lighting, and good food that is a little more : than I usually pay, but not exorbitant. : : </li> : <li>Golden Lotus -- Boulder, CO. Best Hot & Sour soup in the Boulder/DEnver : area. And the rest of the food is good, too. Surprisingly cheap for the quality : of food. : : </li> : <li>Healthy Habits -- Great salad buffet place. All healthy, mostly vegetarian. : Closed. Damn Chain resturants came in and shut them out. (See recommended : chains for the place that shut them down.) : : </li> : <li>Buckhorn Exchange -- go for the place, not the food. The food is good, but : this is the oldest retaurant in Colorado. they serve all kinds of stuff that : people norally don't eat like Rattlesnake, Rocky Mountain Oysters, and other : craziness. : : </li> : <li>Creative Vegetarian -- This was the most incredible restaurant in Boulder. : Great food, great name, art gallery inside. But one night while I was there : (not my fault), the cook got mad and stormed out. He never came back and the : place shut down. But it was great while it lasted. : : </li> : <li>Delhi Darbar -- Boulder and Denver. Such good indian food that it is worth : the 1 hour drive to get there from my place. : : </li> : <li>Colmbine Cafe -- Leadville, CO. Great little cafe with vegetarian choices, : organics foods, and still serves burgers from those who want something simple. : Everything tastes good at 11,000 feet, so this place is just amazing. : : </li> : <li>Mucho Gusto -- Ironically, in Eugene, OR. A great little burrito place in : a town that otherwise is the pit of hell for finding a good place to eat. : : </li> : <li>Japon -- In the trendy neighborhood on Washington Park in Denver. I go here : about twice a month for sushi, despite its location. But it serves plenty : of non-sushi dishes as well, so its a great place to go for Japanese that : will please everyone. : : </li> : <li>El Taco Loco -- Boulder Again. Great little mexican place. : : </li> : <li>Chubby's -- In NE Denver. Where else can a 2 dollar burrito taste so good. : Some of the hottest green chili in town. : : </li> : <li>Pei's Mandarin -- Cedar Rapids, IA. Good Sunday Brunch. Was a minor tradition : in College. : : </li> : <li>The place in wisconsin with the 60 ft tall status of Paul Bunyan that serves : all you can eat pancakes -- dunno the name. The description speaks for itself. : : </li> : <li>Zoey's -- Pizza place in Marion, IA. Little place that is always crowded, : and serves these little, thick pizzas with the sauce on top, and ingrediants : underneath. Another college tradition. : : </li> : <li>Some Steak house halfway up Mt. Hood -- Again, I forget the name. But its : was great food in a romantic environment. Quiet, cozy. We had 3 feet of snow : outside, and were sitting next to a huge fireplace all by ourselves for the : whole meal. </li> : </ul> : <b>Recommended Chain Restaurants</b></p> : <ul> : <li>Benihana -- Very good Japanese Steakhouse. They are scattered around the : coutry, mostly in bigger citites. : : </li> : <li>Tokyo Joe's -- Helthy Japanese Fast Food in Denver. Very tasty. But skip : their sushi. Get their Miso soups, shrimp bowls, or veggie bowls. : : </li> : <li>Chipotle -- Started in Denver, but are now expanding. Huge, tasty burritos. : I have not yet heard if their quality is as good if you leave Denver. But : here, they are a subculture unto themselves. Jovon once ate once with no rice, : and the hto sauce, and his face for the 2 hours it took him to each it has : become the stuff of legends. : : </li> : <li>Big Bowl -- A new chain. And the only place on my list that is actually : trendy and cool. There is one in Chicago, and one in Denver. Full of your : typical downtown cool urbanites. But great food. : : </li> : <li>Beau Jo's -- Colorado style pizzas. Thick whole wheat crusts, and they give : you honey to eat the crusty parts once the pizza is done. : : </li> : <li>Fado Irish Pub -- Good Irish Pub with great interior decoration. All over : the world in Major cities. : : </li> : <li>Sweet Tomatoes -- Salad Buffet with good soups and bakery as well. They : are around in the west, don't know about out East. Every one of them I have : been to is good, except for Littleton, CO. Skip that one. : : </li> : <li>Rodizio Grill -- Denver, CO. Go Hungry. Go with a large group. They give : you a great salad bar, then a pice fo wood that is blue on one side, red on : the otehr. So long as you leave the blue side up, they keep walking up to : your table with various skewers of freshly grilled meats and server it to : you. Go witha group because then you can make th meal last the 2 hours that : it takes to get through the full menu. ITs a nice way to eat, just getting : a few bites of dozens of different things. : : </li> : <li>Carlo's O'Kellys -- who thought of an Irish/Mexican restaurant? But its : darn good. In Central Iowa.</li> : </ul> : <b>Nasty Places I wouldn't go back to.</b></p> : <ul> : <li>Rock Bottom Brewery -- Its a very popular microbrew chain. But the food : just sucks. : : </li> : <li>Happy Teriyaki -- Near my home in Denver. But nasty, nasty food. Never going : back. : : </li> : <li>Taste of India -- Worst Indian food ever. In Eugene, OR, the black hole : of cuisine. : : </li> : <li>Burrito Boy -- Awful Burritos. Again, in Eugene, OR. Never go there. : : </li> : <li>G Willikers - Scary place that looked like a nice little restaurant, ended : up being a weird little place with a pasta bar. Guess where? Eugene, OR. Skip : It. : : </li> : <li>Gwen's -- Gwen's is not very good. But it is the only restaurant in the : town of 400 where I lived for a while in Iowa.
