After reading Wilding America, an article in the current Discover magazine, I have become aware of the phenomenon of 'wildlife corridors' which were propsed by E.O. Wilson in 1967 and have been receving more attention in recent years. The 'wildlife corridor' would exist through the combined efforts of various levels of government and society to create links in the langdscape to help the movement of large carnivores and various other lifeforms so that they will not be isolated from each other biologically. There are more reasons to this, but I'm sure one of the main ones is to help biodiversity and to help reduce endangered species. David Suzuki can explain this better:

Creating "wildlife corridors" to allow animals to migrate between otherwise isolated patches of protected areas has been a popular, although somewhat controversial, idea ever since the eminent Harvard biologist E. O. Wilson first proposed it in the 1960s. Now new studies are showing that such corridors may indeed help improve some species' chances of survival.
