: After reading Wilding America, an article in the current Discover magazine, I have become aware of the phenomenon of 'wildlife corridors' which were propsed by E.O. Wilson in 1967 and have been receving more attention in recent years. The 'wildlife corridor' would exist through the combined efforts of various levels of government and society to create links in the langdscape to help the movement of large carnivores and various other lifeforms so that they will not be isolated from each other biologically. There are more reasons to this, but I'm sure one of the main ones is to help biodiversity and to help reduce endangered species. David Suzuki can explain this better:

: Creating "wildlife corridors" to allow animals to migrate between otherwise isolated patches of protected areas has been a popular, although somewhat controversial, idea ever since the eminent Harvard biologist E. O. Wilson first proposed it in the 1960s. Now new studies are showing that such corridors may indeed help improve some species' chances of survival.

This process is occuring in Florida as we speak. In this county there is a group called the Florida Greenways Task Force http://www.ficus.usf.edu/orgs/greenwys/. They work for this type of thing, as well as the Hillsborough County Environmental Lands Accuisition & Protection Program (ELAPP)http://www.hcprdelapp.org/. Of course as with all good ideas it has been watered down from the original as it battles politics and economics, but still effective in it's way. My department has developed Watershed Management Plans for the entire county, and these are available for the publicto look at. These plans identify current and future land uses and provide suggestions for management. This type of geographically based planning makes the greenway (corridor) concept much more feasible as it looks at natural boundary features rather than human imposed arbitrary lines. Ungodly slow work and a battle at every step, but progress is being made.
