You are correct. Such semantic confusions are indeed a surface issue--no Muslim thinks Allah is the "moon god," as if there were others besides him. These ploys are used to devalue the religions of others so as not to have to seriously consider the spirit of the teachings. We strain at a gnat and swallow a camel.

And what kind of problems could we find with our semantics (not to mention ACTIONS) that devalue our religion to them?
