I don't think it is a dissolution of self -- it is a natural progression from seeing negativity in the world, to wanting to help. When you realize the difficulty, you internalize the sorrow and it turns meditative.
This is not dissolution, rather it is a cocoon-like state.
Soon (or later) Bill will explode out of this state with new energy for helping the world and his friends.
I think that Bill is doin' jest fine...although it may not feel like it to him at times.
