: Today is the Feast Day of Saint Nicholas. On this day we recall the historical figure who was the Christian contribution to the modern persona of Santa Claus. Of course, the Santa Claus we know was a combination of so many archetypes. He is part Christian saint, part pagan god, part Norse myth, etc. He is really an amalgamation of all the best elements of the Yule/Christmas tradition, finally, seen in his most recent incarnation as the famous white-trimmed-red-suited Santa made popular by Thomas Nast and finally popularized through greeting cards, the media and more.

: The historic Nicholas was a bishop of the Church at Myra and is known for his beneficient rule, his love for the poor and for children and his desire to share the Christmas story with them. Legend says he performed miracles involving saving ships at sea and also bringing three children back to life, but we do not know these happened for sure. They could be part of popular belief and pious devotion that sometimes elaborates. We do know historically that he was a bishop. Today is the day we honor Nicholas and try to remember his acts of giving and his devotion to the Gospel, for which, he was fervent.
